What would you do if you realized that the one you married was the wrong one?
CHAPTER ONE
It was the sound of her neighbor, Kelly, screaming just outside her bedroom window that woke her. She lazily lifted her head and sleepily glared at the window before grabbing a pillow and chucking it at the black curtains that hid the glare of the morning sun from her eyes.
“Shut up!” she screamed as loud as someone who’d just woken up could.
But the screaming continued. It only seemed to get louder and louder. So, with a loud grunt, Jackie climbed out of her very comfortable bed, slipped on her black and red house shoes, her matching silk robe and stomped her way out of her room, down the hall, through the living room and out the front door. She let out an angry groaning sound when the brightness of the sun seemed to almost knock her on her ass. “Inconsiderate dicks. Who in the hell wakes up at almost seven in the freaking morning screaming and arguing so freaking loud that the neighborhood hears them?” she snapped as she made her way over to her neighbors yard. “Hey. Excuse me.”
Her neighbor and her boyfriend or husband, continued to argue, about what Jackie could not tell you and did not care, and she needed it to stop.
“I SAW YOU WITH THAT NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS LOOKING ASS BITCH!” Kelly snapped.
“WE’RE JUST FRIENDS!” “YOU DON’T KISS YOUR FRIENDS WHEN YOU’RE MARRIED!”
So, they’re married. She still didn’t care. All she cared about was getting the two to shut the hell up.
“Excuse me.”
“WHAT?” They screamed at her, turning their attention to her.
Oh hell no.
“SHUT THE HELL UP SCREAMING! PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO SLEEP!” She screamed at them, mockingly before she took a big breath. “It is almost seven in the freaking morning and the two of you really got up and chose ‘loud and obnoxious’ today for your daily dose of ‘how to irritate the new neighbor this time.’ I don’t know about the two of you, but I have a job to go to and the last thing I need is to be woken up, early as hell, by two people who clearly don’t want to be married due to the lack of faithfulness.”
“Excuse me? Who are you to – ” “Keep it down or the next time I’m coming over with the water hose and hosing you both down.” And with that, Jackie turned on her heel and walked back over to her house and slammed the door shut.
With a quick run of her fingers through her hair, Jackie walked into her kitchen and proceeded to put on a pot of coffee. There was no use in trying to go back to sleep when she has to be up in another hour and a half. She knew she wouldn’t get up in time if she did. So, while the coffee was going, she rushed up to her room and into the bathroom where she took care of business then ran herself a bath before she went back downstairs just in time for her door bell to ring. With a sigh, she made sure her robe was closed tight and moved towards the door to look out the peephole.
“What do you want, Detective Wright?” she rolled her eyes.
“Open the door, Jackie.”
“No.”
“We need to talk.”
“About?”
“Us.” He said from the other side of the door.
Jackie turned her back to the door. “There is no ‘us’ anymore, Trevor.”
“How can you say that after everything we’ve been through together?”
Before she could stop herself, Jackie was yanking the door open and glaring up at the sex on a stick of a man that was now her ex. Trevor Wright. The man acted as if he was God’s gift to women, like he was just too perfect to belong to just one woman which is why she ended things in the first place. He didn’t know how to keep his dick in just her only. He had to stick it in every other woman he came across.
“You’re screwing with me, right?”
“I told you that I was sorry. She meant nothing to me, Jackie, but you do.”
Jackie folded her arms and leaned onto the door frame. “So, what you’re telling me is that you fucked up a three year relationship for nothing?”
“That’s not what I – ”
“I love you, Trevor. If I am going to be honest with myself, I always will, or at least a part of me always will, but I love myself more. I love myself enough not to accept your definition of love.” She pushed off the frame and offered a small smile. “I don’t deserve a boy who refuses to be with me and me only, but a man who will love, kiss, make love to and want only me. That’s not you, so please stop apologizing and let me go.”
“Jackie.”
“I have to go. I’ll see you around, Trevor.” She stated before she closed the door in his face and went on to drink her coffee, bathe and dress for work.
When Jackie walked through the doors she was greeted by Kendra, the receptionist, her assistant and her best friend. Kendra was a very beautiful woman. She seemed to have legs for days but only stood at a whopping five feet and ten inches, she was a natural red head with a curvy figure. The woman was just gorgeous.
“Good morning, Ms. Harris.”
Jackie glared at her. “Shush up. What do you have for me today?” Kendra laughed as she rounded her desk. “Well, Mrs. Turner called in and said that she won’t be able to make it today – I rescheduled her for next week and pushed Mr. Jones up an hour early today, so he will be in soon.” She said as she followed Jackie into her office.
“You also have a new patient, a Mr. Aaron Cavill, who will be here at one tomorrow. Oh, Trevor called – he wants me to convince you to take him back.”
Jackie rolled her eyes and let out a breath.
“Please see if there is a way to block his number and if there isn’t just ignore his calls. I’m done with him and his inability to stay faithful.”
“Wow. Really?”
“Yes, really. Why do you sound shocked?”
“Well, from what I’ve witnessed, a lot of women find it hard to let go of someone they’ve loved for so long so easily.” Kendra admitted. “I just thought it would take you a little longer to finalize the end of your relationship, that’s all.”
“That may be true for some, or a lot, of women but I don’t have time for the bullshit. If you love someone, you won’t hurt them in such a way that Trevor hurt me. I can’t say that I blame those women for staying because we are taught to believe in forgiveness and second chances but,” Jackie placed her purse in her desk drawer and met Kendra’s gaze. “...what our parents and others failed to teach us is that love is not suppose to hurt and that if someone loves you they wouldn’t turn around and do something so hurtful that it needs forgiving in the first place.”
“Damn. You should have been my mother. The only thing my parents taught me is how to argue, how to steal and how to find a rich man and get him to marry you without signing a prenup.”
“Speaking of your parents, have you spoken to them recently or seen them?” Kendra scoffed and shook her head.
“Hell no. Why would I want to see or speak to them?”
“So that you can find peace within yourself and forgive them – not for them but for yourself. You need to forgive them if you ever want to be truly happy.”
“I am happy. I’m a happily married woman, with the best friend, and boss, a woman can ask for, and a great job. What else could a woman ask for?”
“Look, all I want is for you to be able to see your parents, or hear their names mentioned, without your mood, or facial expression, changing. For that to happen, you have to forgive them and take back the power they have to change how you feel in a single moment.”
Kendra glared at Jackie.
“Ugh! I hate it when you get all psych on me. Let me get back to work.” She said and turned around to walk out of her office but not before Jackie called after her. “Yeah?”
“You’re my best friend and I love you. All I want is for you to be mentally, physically and emotionally happy – that’s all.”
Kendra smiled. “I know. I love you, too.”
A half an hour went by before a knock sounded at her office door. “Come in.” The door opened and in walked Kendra with a big smile on her lips.
“What is it?”
“Uh, Mr. Jones called and said he can’t make it. His wife is sick and he can’t leave her at home alone.”
“O-kay, thank you for that, but that doesn’t explain the big smile on your face.”
“Mr. Cavill is here. He said he really needed to see you today and since Mr. Jones cancelled, I thought it would be a good idea to let him take his spot.”
“Um okay, that still doesn’t explain the smile, but you can send him in.”
“You’ll see when you meet him.” Kendra said before she turned and walked away, closing the door behind her.
A few seconds later, she heard a knock before the door was pushed open to reveal a dark haired, blue eyed, superman built – in height and muscle tone – of a man dressed in a pair of black dress shoes and pants with a cream colored sweater. His hair was tousled, as if he’d been running his fingers through it non-stop, but still somehow managed to look good.
With a soft smile, Jackie stood from her chair and moved around her desk to meet him. She didn’t fail to notice how he took her in from head to toe and how he clenched his jaw when his eyes landed on her face.
“Hello, Mr. Cavill, it’s nice to meet you.” She said as she held out her hand.
He stared at it for a moment before he reached out and swallowed her hand with his own in a shake. “It’s nice to meet you, too, Dr. Harris. I appreciate you seeing me, so soon, on such short notice.”
“It’s no problem. I had two cancellations today, so I had the time.” She stated before she turned to head back to her desk. “Please, have a seat and when you’re ready you can tell me why you felt the need to come and see me today.”
